Count sounds, not letters
A syllable is a spoken beat built around a vowel sound. “Beautiful” has three; “queue” has one. This English syllable counter checks 126,045 words in the CMU pronunciation dictionary and marks spelling-based estimates separately.
Use line counts for lyrics, classroom writing, and English 5–7–5 haiku. A word can have more than one pronunciation, so the word notes show alternate counts where the dictionary lists them.
A few useful answers
Does this divide words into syllables?
It counts spoken syllables. It does not guess written hyphenation or show phonetic syllable boundaries.
Why is a word marked estimated?
It is not in the loaded dictionary. Names, new words, and regional pronunciations need a quick check aloud; adjust the count in Word notes.
What happens to my poem?
Counting happens in your browser. Your text is not uploaded or saved here; reloading clears your draft and corrections.
Does it count other languages or numbers?
The dictionary is US English. Numbers and symbols are omitted. Spell numbers out, and check any non-English word manually.
